ICC Agriculture Scholarship
Honoring a Farming Legacy, Investing in the Future
The Johnson Family ICC Agriculture Scholarship was established in December of 2024 to honor the memory of Everett and Betty Johnson and to support students pursuing careers in agriculture at Illinois Central College (ICC). This Designated Scholarship Fund provides an annual scholarship through the ICC Educational Foundation to a student enrolled at ICC, with preference given to those who have participated in FFA and/or 4-H.
Honoring a Life Rooted in Agriculture
This scholarship reflects the life and values of Everett and Betty Johnson, who raised their five children on a small family farm in Jersey County, Illinois, during a time when small farms were steadily disappearing from the rural landscape. Their farm evolved over the years—from a crop operation, to dairy and beef, and eventually to swine—adapting as agriculture itself changed.
Everett worked tirelessly, including taking on a second job, to support his family and sustain the farm. Betty embodied the strength and dedication of a farm wife of her era. Alongside caring for their home and children, she managed a large garden, preserved food through canning and freezing, and raised and processed hundreds of chickens each year to feed the family. Together, they modeled hard work, perseverance, and a deep respect for the land.
Their son, Michael Johnson, shared that growing up on the family farm shaped his values and appreciation for agriculture, family, and community—lessons he carries to this day. This scholarship is a tribute to that way of life and to the enduring impact Everett and Betty had on their family.
Supporting the Next Generation of Agricultural Leaders
Through this fund, the Johnson family hopes to encourage students who share a passion for agriculture and who are preparing for careers that will continue to sustain rural communities and food systems for generations to come.
