William E. and Betty L. McCormick Memorial Scholarship

William McCormick’s second wife Judy, who he married some time following the death of his first wife Betty, created the William E. and Betty L. McCormick scholarship fund.  Young people growing up in a single parent household face many challenges, including paying for a college education.  Judy established this scholarship to assist deserving students who desire to pursue a college education, and who live with a single widowed or divorced parent..

Judy wrote a brief note to the recipient of this $1000 scholarship.  It reads as follows:  “My reason for establishing the college scholarship fund in my husband and his first wife’s name was because we each came from divorced families and experienced the struggles a single parent goes through in trying to provide the best possible opportunities for continuing education for their children.

It is my sincere hope that in some small way, the scholarship will make that opportunity easier for someone in a similar situation. “

The counseling staff at MHS annually appoints a committee to select the recipient, consisting of members of the counseling and teaching staff of MHS.  Qualifications of the scholarship are:

  • Must be an MHS Senior who will be attending college or university in the year immediately following graduation.
  • Living with a single widowed or divorced parent.
  • Has demonstrated the following attributes during high school:
  • Positive attitude, Encouraging to others, Charitable, Free spirited, Hard working, Compassionate, Fun Loving, Non-judgmental/Open-Minded, and a Role model to underclassmen.
