Scholarship awarded annually to an MHS Senior who has excelled in Music.

The Kay-Beth Jibben –Bane Music Award is a $500 scholarship, annually awarded to a qualified Senior student from Morton High School who has exemplified outstanding leadership and overall music contribution according to the recommendations of the music department faculty. The award was established in 1989 by the Class of 1954 in loving memory of their classmate Kay-Beth Jibben.

While at MHS Kay-Beth participated in class government, clarinet in the band, chorus, piano accompaniment, school yearbook, class plays, scholastic clubs and athletics. She was the salutatorian of the Class of 1954.

Kay-Beth received her Bachelor of Arts degree, in 1961, from Millikin University, Decatur, IL and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She received her Masters from Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont and taught Piano while in graduate school. In 1961, she studied at the prestigious Juilliard School of Dance, Drama and Music in New York City. Kay-Beth was a faculty member at The Brearley School for Girls and the Greenwich House of Music School… both in New York. And the list goes on… She was married to Reverend J. Donald Bane of Beaumont, TX. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Christina Diane, and a son, Michael Andrew. She died after giving birth to her last child.

Students chosen for this scholarship award must meet the following criteria:

Must be a senior who plans to continue their music studies
Must have maintained a grade point of 3.0 through their first 7 semesters.
Must have excelled in their music studies.

The Class of ’54 maintains a permanent plaque in the music department here at MHS, and also provides a paperweight award in addition to the cash scholarship.

2012 Winner - Jordan Sullivan

Scott Witzig presented the 2012 Kay Beth Jibben Bane Memorial Scholarship to MHS Senior, Jordan Sullivan at the MHS Honors, Leadership Recognition, and Scholarship Awards night held April 30, 2012 at Bertha Frank Performing Arts Center. The scholarship goes to an MHS student who has excelled in Music during high school and who will continue their music studies in college.

Jordan Sullivan has been a member of the Concert Band, Symphonic Winds, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Madrigal Brass, and Musical Pit at Morton High School. Jordan plays tuba and percussion.

During his time at MHS, Jordan has marched to 4 State Championships, helped lead the brass section and marching band to Finals at the Bands of America Super-Regionals, placed 3rd at Grand Nationals, and performed for the President of the United States.

As a section leader of the Symphonic Winds, he's lead the group to selections and performances at the Illinois SuperState Concert Festival and the Illinois Music Education Conference.

As an individual, Jordan was selected for the Twin City Honor Band, the Illinois All-District Band, and Illinois All-State Band. Music is Jordan's life, and he will study for a career in music.
